Mindy Woods is an Australian chef and owner of Karkalla Byron Bay. She was a finalist in the fourth series of MasterChef Australia in 2012. She previously worked at Lotus Dining as Head Of Culinary Development, Chief Executive Officer and Director of Cuisine, according to her Linkedin profile. She has also worked as Co-creator & Director at Gourmet Earth. She began as Head Chef at Shirt Bar.
Prior to joining MasterChef Australia season 4, Mindy Woods was a physiotherapist. During her time in the MasterChef kitchen, she created a variety of delicious dishes that wowed the judges. Her most memorable dishes were her Chocolate Mousse Tart and her Crispy Skin Duck with Fragrant Red Curry and Lychees.
A descendant of the Widjabul tribe, among the 15 aboriginal tribes of the Bandjalung Nation, the original inhabitants of the northern coast of New South Wales, Australia, the MasterChef finalist in 2012 was inspired by the teachings of her grandmother, who is aborigine, her mother and aunties.
“I take great inspiration from local and seasonal produce and native indigenous ingredients. I was inspired by the teachings of my Nan (Widjabul term for grandmother) who is aborigine, my mother and aunties, when it comes to understanding and appreciating food.”

Mindy Woods is a descendant of the Widjabul tribe, among the 15 aboriginal tribes of the Bandjalung Nation, the original inhabitants of the northern coast of New South Wales, Australia.
“I’m a descendent of King Jack Kapeen, a leader of the Widjabul Wia-bul people, whose country extends through The Channon, Minyon Falls, Casino, Lismore and wraps around into South Ballina,” Mindy told Northern Rivers Review. “My Nan on my mum’s side had 11 children and raised some nieces and nephews as well, so I have an incredible family network around this area.”
“My Nan died when I was 12,” she added. “She was such a matriarch and peaceful woman. She didn’t have a lot to say but, when she did, you knew you had to listen.”
Her mum and dad appeared behind the scenes on Masterchef finals week in 2012 to support their brilliant daughter. Mindy’s dad had recently returned from deployment to Afghanistan. Her dad was a cook with the Air Force.

Mindy Woods lives in Byron Bay, New South Wales with her wife Rachelle. She married her wife in 2017 just six weeks after Australia voted ‘yes’ to marriage equality.
“As well as formally recognising our relationship, we celebrated the fact that equality had finally happened,” Mindy told Northern Rivers Review. “I didn’t realise how important that was until we made our public commitment.”
Mindy met her now-wife on MasterChef in 2012. They started dating in 2014 and married in 2017.
“We struck up a friendship during filming then a relationship two years later,” Mindy told Northern Rivers Review of her wife, Rachelle, who combines behind-the-scenes work at Karkalla with her role as a Line Producer for GoggleBox.

Chef Mindy Woods was a contestant in the fourth series of the Australian reality cooking series MasterChef Australia in 2012. In March 2022, she was announced among the returning contestants on MasterChef Australia for its 14th season.
