Alice Gibson Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down

Alice Gibson Biography – Alice Gibson Wiki

Alice Gibson is a Canadian potter and contestant on The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down 2024. She lives in Penticton, B.C. and has been potting since the spring of 2020.

Alice recently graduated from a ceramics program at Selkirk College’s Kootenay Studio Arts and hopes to be a full-time ceramist one day, turning her love of making beautiful objects into a career.

Alice started making pottery in the spring of 2020. She told CBC: “I started making ceramics in my parents’ greenhouse in the spring of 2020. During the pandemic, like many people, I had a lot of time on my hands and I was searching for a creative outlet so I asked my dad (a high school art teacher) to bring home a pottery wheel from his school.

“I was spending 8 hours a day on the wheel teaching myself how to centre and throw clay. Being at the wheel felt intuitive and all I wanted to do was make pottery. I eventually dropped out of university where I was studying psychology, joined my local pottery guild and applied to pottery school in Nelson BC. I spent the last year studying at Kootenay Studio Arts in Nelson learning about the nuances that go into creating quality ceramics.”

Her work is influenced by mid-century modern design, finding beauty in simplicity and echoing that mentality in the pieces she creates. Describing her pottery style in three words, she said: “Peaceful, minimalist and playful”.
