Brendan Tang Biography – Brendan Tang Wiki

Brendan Tang is an award-winning visual artist, ceramicist, ceramics instructor and a judge on CBC’s The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down. He is widely known for his sculptural ceramic work.

Brendan’s work explores issues of identity and the hybridization of our material and non-material culture while simultaneously expressing a love of both futuristic technologies and ancient traditions. Although he is primarily known for his ceramic work, Brendan continues to produce and exhibit work in a wide variety of mixed and multiple mediums.

He is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades, both nationally and internationally. He is a recipient of the 2016 Biennale Internationale de Vallauris Contemporary Ceramic Award, in France, shortlisted for the Sobey Art Prize, and a finalist in the Loewe Foundation’s International Craft Prize, Madrid, Spain.

Brendan’s work has been exhibited at the Museum of Anthropology, Vancouver, BC, the Gardiner Museum, Toronto, ON, Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver, BC, the Musee National Des Beaux-Arts du Quebec, Quebec City, QC, the Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche, Faenza, Italy, the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal, QC, the Boston Art Museum, Boston, MA, the Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, WA, the Foundation d’Entreprise Bernardaud, Limoges, France, among many others.

In 2023, Brendan had an exhibition in New York City’s famed Chelsea gallery district. Titled Cultured, the two-person show brings Brendan together with artist Coby Kennedy at c24 Gallery. The exhibition showcases works from Brendan’s Manga Ormolu series, comprising “ceramic forms that combine elements of Chinese Ming Dynasty era vases with modern, manga- and anime-inspired robotics and technology to explore the complex layers of his own mixed-Asian heritage.”

Brendan’s professional practice has taken him across North America and to India, Europe, the Middle East, the Caribbean, China and Japan.

An instructor at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, Brendan also co-hosts a podcast that sheds light on the contemporary ceramic scene in Canada called The Kiln Sitters.

He received an MFA from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.

Brendan Tang Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down

Brendan Tang is a celebrity judge on CBC’s The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down. The artist will join fellow judge Natalie Waddell for the first season of the competition series based on The Great Pottery Throw Down.

“It’s a real pressure cooker,” Brendan told ECU, noting contestants had only two-and-a-half studio days per episode. “They have so little time. I give my students three or four weeks to make a piece. But it was amazing. It just blew my mind what these potters accomplished. It was wild.”

Hosted by actor Jennifer Robertson, the eight-episode series will premiere on CBC on Thursday, February 8, 2024. The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down was shot in Vancouver, in the pottery studios at the former Emily Carr University campus on Granville Island.

The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down contestants are Kiefer Floreal, Alice Gibson, Thomas Haskell, Susan Johnston, Renu Mathew, Andrew McCullough, Jen Sonnenberg, Jackie Talmey-Lennon, Elsa Valinas and Michael Wood.
