Elsa Valinas is a Mexican multidisciplinary artist, trained as an industrial and interior designer. The ceramic artist is a contestant on The Great Canadian Pottery Throwdown 2024. She is the potter behind Clay Corazon.

Elsa lives in Fredericton, N.B. and has been potting for over three years. She used to be the manager of a medium-production pottery studio, but is now self-employed, using her apartment as her working space to create her art. She hopes to eventually set up her own studio and sell her pieces, as well as give back by facilitating workshops and teaching others about the craft.

After graduating from New Brunswick College of Craft and Design in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Elsa moved to Prince Edward Island to gain experience on production pottery. Now back in Fredericton and with her brand Clay Corazon, she is finally perusing her dream of emotively create soulful ceramic companions that remind us to live fully in the present.

Speaking about her start in making pottery, she told CBC: “At university, I took a hand-build workshop where I learnt the traditional process of preparing clay. Hammering a piece of solid clay, making it powder, sieving it, adding water, and letting it dry to finally be able to use it. That experience changed me, I fell in love with clay.

“I wanted badly to work in ceramics, but my economic situation made me move toward furniture design and later on, interior design. After many years of working in a very stressful environment, my anxiety levels were so high that I started having panic attacks, which made me reconsider my lifestyle.

“I had the opportunity to come to Canada, to seek a better quality of life. I found ceramics courses and the butterflies in my stomach reminded me that I could finally study ceramics. It was the best decision.”

Describing her pottery style in three words, she said: “Expressive, original and decorative”.

Elsa Valinas, 43, is a contestant on the inaugural season of The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down on CBC and CBC Gem. Award-winning artist and ceramics instructor Brendan Tang and renowned ceramicist and educator Natalie Waddell serve as judges.

Speaking about the possibility of winning The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down, Elsa said: “I can work in stressful situations, I have excellent problem-solving skills, and my design background trained me to analyze, reassess and fix. I will do my best to create pieces that fulfil every challenge with the best attitude and enjoy every single moment of the competition.”

The ten talented potters competing to be crowned best at the wheel are Kiefer Floreal, Alice Gibson, Thomas Haskell, Susan Johnston, Renu Mathew, Andrew McCullough, Jen Sonnenberg, Jackie Talmey-Lennon, Elsa and Michael Wood.
