Thomas Haskell is a self-taught potter and contestant on The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down 2024. He was one of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) Emerging Artists 2021.

Thomas grew up in Trinidad and now lives in Toronto, Ont. He is a self-taught potter whose island roots inspire his ceramic work. He’s now the manager and teacher at Create Art Studio, a studio in Toronto’s East End.

Thomas started making pottery as a small child in Trinidad. He told CBC: “I’ve always had my hands in clay. As a small child in Trinidad, I would constantly be making things out of clay and plasticine. I would make something interesting and then smush it back together so I could make something else.

“I got so obsessed during my MFA at OCAD that my thesis show was entirely ceramic. I now teach and love every day that I can work with clay. Being entirely self-taught in ceramics has always been a point of personal pride.”

Describing his pottery style in three words, he said: “Striking, Narrative, Eclectic”.

His goal is to have his work shown in museums and to share a realistic perspective on the Caribbean and its stories through his ceramic pieces.

Thomas Haskell, 35, is a contestant on the inaugural season of The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down on CBC and CBC Gem. Award-winning artist and ceramics instructor Brendan Tang and renowned ceramicist and educator Natalie Waddell serve as judges.

Thomas announced the news on Instagram, writing: “Absolutely over the moon to share that I’ll be competing on The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down alongside so many amazing potters from across the country!”

Speaking about the thought of winning The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down, Thomas said: “I’ve already had such joy meeting people, making with them that I feel like I’ve won already! To win would be a victory for everyone who taught themselves how to do something, with just a pure love of the material.”

The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down Season 1 potters are Kiefer Floreal, Alice Gibson, Thomas, Susan Johnston, Renu Mathew, Andrew McCullough, Jen Sonnenberg, Jackie Talmey-Lennon, Elsa Valinas and Michael Wood.

The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down contestant Thomas Haskell is Queer. According to his Instagram bio, he is a “Proud Caribbean Queer [Rainbow Flag Emoji]”.

According to Planned Parenthood, the word Queer describes “sexual and gender identities other than straight and cisgender. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people may all identify with the word queer. Queer is sometimes used to express that sexuality and gender can be complicated, change over time, and might not fit neatly into either/or identities, like male or female, gay or straight.”
