DWTS Interview

Why did you sign up to Dancing With The Stars?

I’ve always thought of Dancing With The Stars as a really entertaining TV show. For me it stands out because people are being taken out of their comfort zone but also exploring their talent in a field they may have never tried. It’s a great challenge to be able to test yourself.

Do you have any previous injuries that you need to consider?

I had a bulging disc in my back about 10 years ago. It hasn’t bothered me for a long time so I’m hoping it doesn’t decide to make a fresh appearance during a lift.

How do you think you’ll cope with the criticism of the judges?

Having never ballroom danced before, I’m fully prepared that I’ll be dragged across the coals for my form and posture at some point. As long as I make sure they can never tell me I wasn’t trying hard enough, I’ll be okay with whatever else they throw at me. Bring it on!

Do you have any fun dancing anecdotes?

During one of our Vegas shows I once went down into a kind of squat and then spent the next 10 seconds slipping and stumbling trying to get up. I ended up flat on my back. I don’t know if the audience noticed but the band sure did. They almost couldn’t continue playing with how hard they were laughing.

What’s something that we don’t know about you that might surprise your fans?

I’m a bit of a demon at trivia. It helped me win Celebrity Mastermind last year and in 2006 I was officially crowned Australia’s Brainiest Musician by none other than Sandra Sully. For some reason my head seems to be full of useless information, so if you’re looking for a teammate at the pub, I’m your man!

What song always gets you up on the dance floor?

In my younger clubbing days I used to regularly visit Q Bar in Sydney. Every time I went I would request the DJ play Raspberry Beret by Prince. I got so predictable that eventually he would see me enter the club and spin it without me asking.

Who’s your biggest threat to win the show?

In my eyes the favourite to win the show would probably be Christie Whelan Browne. She has a lot of experience in musical theatre, and movement and dance are a big part of that. I wouldn’t be surprised if she looks the goods from the very first steps.
