John Macris was a Sydney gangster, a former restaurateur and property developer.

John Macris was expanding his business in his new home of Athens, moving beyond nightclubs to enter the security business.

He was shot dead on 31 October 2018 outside his home in Troias St at the Panorama area of Voula, a southern suburb of the Greek capital, Athens, Greece.

He left his home to travel to the office of his new security company ahead of the office’s official opening that evening.

Macris was ambushed by as many as three assailants as he was getting into his Smart car. He was shot with a 9mm gun four times through the passenger window, hitting him in the chest, stomach and shoulder blade.

Police are now investigating whether his death was related to his potential involvement in the drug trade or in organised crime. Authorities say he had run-ins with police in the past, both in Australia and in Greece.

Police were seeking camera footage for clues to the killing and were conducting ballistics tests on the bullet casings to determine whether the weapon had been used in other crimes.

Members of the Ibrahim family were in 2012 cleared of conspiring to kill Macris, who was believed by some to be linked to the 2009 near-fatal shooting of Fadi Ibrahim. There is no suggestion the Ibrahim family is in any way connected to Macris’ shooting.

Family and friends gathered at Saint Nektarios Church in Voula, Athens overnight for the funeral of murdered Greek Australian man John Macris. The service was closed off to about 50 people, including his widow Viktoria Karyda, his son and daughter, his mother, father, brother, and other close family and friends.
Macris’ body is expected to be laid to rest in Australia. His body will be returned to Sydney for burial and reports also claim his widow is now also planning to move to Australia with their two children.
