Mary Coustas Biography – Mary Coustas Wiki

Mary Coustas is a Greek-Australian actress, comedian and author. She is best known for her performance in Wogs Out of Work and comedic character Effie from the TV sitcom Acropolis Now from 1989 to 1992.

Mary’s portrayal of Effie has transcended generations with her confidence, malapropisms of a stereotypical second-generation Greek-Australian, becoming a much-loved cultural icon.

Since then, she has starred as Effie in commercials and other shows including Just Quietly in 2001 and Greeks on the Roof in 2003. She has also appeared in numerous Australian series including Wildside, The Secret Life of Us and Rake.

Mary Coustas Parents

Mary Coustas is the daughter of Steve and Fani Coustas. She has an elder brother, Con Coustas.

“Both my parents were good at giving me the room I needed once I got to a certain age,” Mary said in an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald. “When I reached 16, I said, “Do you want me to lie like everyone else, or do you want the truth?” And they said they wanted the truth. My private life has been very transparent; I didn’t want Mum not to know the daughter she had. As a consequence she’s been able to share in a lot of my success, a lot of my joy and all my sorrows.”

Her father, Steve, died in 1987 after a series of heart attacks.

“When Dad died, I was really envious of how unapologetically Mum grieved. She cried and cried and you could tell that was the healthiest way to go about it. I discovered my mother when my dad died. She was the stranger who was living in our house; Dad had just eclipsed everyone.”

Do you have any fears going into the show?

The mental aspect of retaining so much physical information is oneof my greatest challenges and fears. There is so much to learn in such a small amount of time. The detail is insane. My hands, my feet, my knees, my hips, my neck, my head are all doing their own thing at any one time.

What do you think your dancing strengths are or will be?

Oddly, I think in many ways, having played a character like Effie for almost 35 years has prepared me for taking risks and not taking myself too seriously. I hope that it translates to the dance floor in a theatrical, emotive and impactful way.

Do you have any previous injuries that you need to consider?

None, thankfully. Except for the extended family of blisters that have migrated to my feet since starting this show.

Do you have any fun dancing anecdotes?

Anyone that has seen my one woman show This Is Personal will attest to the hideous performance art dancing my poor parents had to witness at my third year graduation at acting school.

What do you think your dance partner’s biggest challenge will be?

I won the dance partner lottery when I got Aric. I have never heard anyone explain something repeatedly in so many different ways with as much patience as Aric.

Who’s your biggest threat to with the show?

I think Pia Miranda. She is a pocket rocket. A Survivor winner and a girl who goes all in to win. I know Pia and I know how strategic, hard-working and talented she is. She’s the one to watch.

What song always gets you up on the dance floor?

Anything by George Michael, Prince, Salt-N-Pepa or Beyonce.
