Robert Hernandez Biography – Robert Hernandez Wiki

Robert Hernandez is a Private Chef in San Francisco, CA. Previously, he was the chef de cuisine at San Francisco restaurant, Octavia. He spent several years growing in a variety of restaurants including the celebrated kitchens of Quince and Delfina.

At the age of 16, Hernandez entered the hospitality industry via movie theater concessions. His parents were skeptical of the financial security a career as a chef could provide, and by 18 he had moved north to study international relations at San Francisco State University. He also picked up a job in Macy’s food department, prepping and cooking for the inhouse restaurant. Eventually Hernandez followed his true passion to the California Culinary Academy, externing at Quince and Delfina.

He then joined the team at Blue Stem Brasserie and later pop-up Gung Ho before changing things up with a six month stint helping a chef-friend in Arizona. Back in San Francisco, Hernandez worked at private social club The Battery, was part of the opening team of Square by Sons and Daughters, and later moved to Aveline.

In 2014, he assisted Chef Casey Thompson in opening Aveline and, in 2015, he accepted a position in Melissa Perello’s second restaurant, Octavia. With influences from acclaimed Chef Owner, Melissa Perello, as well as Chefs Jen Jackson and Sara Hauman, Hernandez emerged as a natural leader and was awarded the role of Chef de Cuisine in 2017.

He grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles where his passion for food grew through family gatherings and his mother’s cooking. Some of Robert’s favorite childhood memories include large gatherings around the kitchen table, eating ceviche, tamales, essentially anything his mother or aunt put on the table.

He has worked in many notable restaurants in San Francisco, including one Michelin-starred restaurant Octavia. At Octavia, Robert worked his way up to Chef de Cuisine and was recognized as San Francisco’s Rising Star Chef in 2019. There, he honed his culinary skills and developed a passion for marrying seasonal ingredients with his inherited flavor profiles.
