Kate Austen is a private chef and contestant on Series 19 of Great British Menu. She has worked at leading restaurants including Morston Hall, Marcus Wareing, Restaurant Frantzen and Restaurant AOC. Most recently she was part of Gordon Ramsay’s development team and is now a private chef in London.
Born in London, Kate studied sociology at Newcastle University, but struggled to see what the next step could be. She credits her trajectory to Galton Blackiston and Greg Anderson, who took a chance and gave her an opportunity when others may not have.
After working at Morston Hall, Kate wanted to work in restaurants with the highest accolades, and landed a job working for Marcus Wareing at his then 2 * restaurant. She then went on to work at several 1 * and 2 * restaurants in London, before moving to Copenhagen to work at AOC (2*), where she became the youngest female head chef.
After leaving AOC she went on to work as Sous chef at Frantzén, Stockholm, currently holding 3 Michelin stars and ranked No. 6 in the world – and all before Kate turned the age of 30.
Kate worked in Gordon Ramsay’s development team and is now a private chef in London. She loves being experimental in the kitchen and her precision, dedication and attention to detail in everything she does in paramount in the dishes she creates.

Chef Kate Austen is representing London and South East on Great British Menu 2024 alongside Joe Hill, Vince Smith and Ashok Kumar.
“I will be competing on the BBC2 show ‘Great British Menu.’ I will be representing London and the South East,” Kate announced the news on Instagram. “I’ve grown up watching the show so to now be a part of it is quite extraordinary.”
The four chefs compete for London and South East England with canapes, starters and fish dishes inspired by the Olympics and Paralympics, all hoping to cook at a banquet to wish Team GB athletes luck as they head for Paris 2024. Kate’s menu celebrates gold medal Olympians.
