Ashok Kumar is Executive Chef at Kanishka by Atul Kochhar in London and a contestant on Series 19 of Great British Menu. He has worked in the kitchens of several prestigious restaurants including the Taj Hotel and Palaces, the Hilton and Crowne Plaza, Benares in Mayfair and Atul Kochhar’s Indian Essence.

Born in the Punjab, Ashok grew up in a household centred around cooking and produce. Food was at the heart of Ashok’s family. His grandmother’s cooking is one of the reasons he started to pursue a culinary career.

After receiving a diploma in hotel management from the Chandigarh Institute of Hotel Management, Kumar went on to work as commis chef at the Taj Hotel and Palaces, the Hilton and Crowne Plaza in India. His brother supported his culinary dream and helped him to follow that dream to London when he was just 24 years old.

Kumar then joined Atul Kochhar’s Indian Essence as Jr. Sous Chef, working his way up to Executive Chef. He has also held the position of both Sous Chef and Head Chef at Michelin-starred Benares in Mayfair before becoming the executive chef at Kanishka.

In his Executive Chef role at Kanishka, Ashok plays a vital role in curating all menus and producing the outstanding contemporary pan-Indian food the restaurant has become so well renowned for, upholding and surpassing the restaurant’s reputation, and continuously striving to anticipate, meet and exceed great expectations.

Ashok’s cooking style is a twist of modern Indian and modern British cuisine. His goal is to make sure that his food is polished and seasonal, and he is keen to bring accolades to Kanishka.

Ashok beat strong competition to make it to the final of the National Chef of the Year 2022 competition. He also won the Lumina Challenge 2023.

Ashok Kumar is representing London and South East on Great British Menu 2024 alongside Joe Hill, Kate Austen and Vince Smith. The four chefs compete with canapes, starters and fish dishes inspired by the Olympics and Paralympics, all hoping to cook at a banquet to wish Team GB athletes luck as they head for Paris 2024.
