Karl ‘Kai’ Mok is an architectural designer and contestant on BBC’s Interior Design Masters. He is the founder of Friends Studio, an Interior Design Studio based in London and Newcastle. He is also an educator at Newcastle University’s School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, as well as InvestIN Education. and
Karl studied architecture and began working in the design industry six years ago. Hailing from Malaysia, he now calls Newcastle his home. He draws inspiration from travelling and natural materials. His style is described as a new urban jungle, which is an apt description for how many houseplants he has fostered.
“My Style? Tropical Retro-Futurist. Looking back to look forward, I love contemporary interiors with a touch of that classic mid-century mod look! Simple, raw materials with minimal yet BOLD use of colour. My creations should feel like they TRANSPORT you to somewhere else.”
He is focused on making design accessible by working at the intersection of architecture, interiors and branding. He has produced a number of high-profile public installations, and worked on high-street regeneration, commercial, and hospitality projects as a consultant.
