Sophie Wootton Biography – Sophie Wootton Wiki

Sophie Wootton is a ceramicist, designer maker and contestant on The Great Pottery Throw Down 2024. Based in Warwickshire, Sophie’s first encounter with clay was in 2020 when she started her degree in Design Crafts. She is the owner of Sophie Wootton Design, a creative pottery business making and selling handmade products.

Sophie is a designer-maker specialising in ceramics. She said: “I throw all of my pieces on the pottery wheel because I love the immediate response your actions have on the clay.

“I am fascinated by the personal connection between the maker and the material. Throwing on the wheel has allowed me to appreciate craftsmanship and has given me an eye for fine detail. Transforming a ball of clay into a fine-walled structure never fails to excite me.”

In 2023, Sophie graduated with a first class degree in Design Crafts from De Montfort University. She was the recipient of the Potclays Graduate Award as part of the University’s Educlaytion programme.

“I started my degree which explored a variety of different crafts where I hoped to find an area I loved,” she said. “My degree taught me skills in a variety of disciplines including glass blowing, jewellery and woodwork, but this is where I fell in love with ceramics. I loved the versatility and the endless possibilities that clay provides.”

During her second year of university, she won a live brief set by Habitat which gave her a week’s work experience in their homeware design studio. Since graduating, Sophie has bought a pottery wheel and set up a small ceramics studio in a shed in her garden.

Inspiration

Sophie’s current work is inspired by her late grandmother’s painting. She said: “My current work is inspired by my late grandma’s painting. Having initially struggled with the loss of my grandma, I am now using her work as inspiration for mine.

“The connection I felt when finding her paintings is one I have tried to replicate by leaving my mark as the maker in my work; whether it is hypothetically or physically. I love how cermaics has given me a way to connect with her. She was always my number one fan, always asking what I was working on and what she could buy.”

Sophie Wootton is a contestant on Series 7 of The Great Pottery Throw Down on Channel 4, judged by Keith Brymer Jones and Rich Miller. She announced the news on Instagram, writing: “I am on the new series of The Great Pottery Throw Down! I have been lucky enough to be one of the 12 new potters entering the @potterythrow studio.

“I can’t wait for you all to see what I’ve been up to! Series 7 of The Great Pottery Throw Down starts January 7th, 7.45 pm on Channel 4! See you there.”
