Kate Butch is a drag artist and contestant on the fifth series of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK on BBC Three. The 26-year-old, who uses the Pronouns she/her in drag and they/them out of drag, is from Buxton in Derbyshire. She describes her drag as “Camp, bawdy, silly, quite bonkers!”
Kate first did drag at the age of 6 when they begged to be the pantomime Dame in their school play. “It was the first time that I realised I could make people laugh and wear a wig whilst doing it,” she said.
Buxton native Kate Butch burst onto the London drag scene in 2018. She has performed with RuPaul’s Drag Race stars Sasha Velour, The Vivienne and Bimini Bon Boulash. Her podcast Queers Gone By was recently featured in The Guardian’s Top 50 Funny Podcasts.
Speaking about the highlights of her drag career, Kate said: “I’ve penned my own plays, comedy sketches, and stand-up routines and taken shows to the Edinburgh Fringe and beyond and received some fabulous reviews. I’ve even performed on London’s glittering West End – for one night only, but it still counts!”

Introducing herself, Kate said: “I am the face, the body, the fashion and the liar of Series Five! I am a silly goose from Buxton in Derbyshire, and in homage to my namesake, Kate Bush, I took to the wily, windy moors and landed here on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK!”
Describing her drag, the 26-year-old Buxton native said: “I’m a stand-up comedian, live singer, hostess, compere, and podcast host, to name but a few of my drag roles, but really I am a theatre and performance queen at heart. I would describe my drag style as “Hollywood starlet with a migraine”- I love a bright clashing pattern with an hourglass silhouette.
“I’m a stand-up comedian, live singer and podcast host to name a few of my skills! I’m doing my own thing, but whether the judges buy it… well, that is another question entirely.”
The queens battling it out to take the title this year are Banksie, Miss Naomi Carter, Alexis Saint Pete, Tomara Thomas, DeDeLicious, Kate, Vicki Vivacious, Ginger Johnson, Cara Melle, and Michael Marouli.
Kate Butch Drag Name
The Derbyshire drag queen was inspired to call themselves Kate Butch after being a lifelong fan of the singer Kate Bush. She explained: “My drag name comes from my favourite artist of all time, Kate Bush. I love Kate Bush because just like her, I’m quirky, theatrical and just do my own thing!”
