Cara Melle is an American drag performer and a contestant on the fifth series of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK on BBC Three. London-based Cara, who uses the pronouns she/her, is originally from Atlanta, Georgia, USA. She moved to London to study at the London College of Fashion but ended up staying once her drag career took off.

Cara has a background in musical theatre, performing drag for the first time at the age of 17 at her boarding art school in California. Later, Cara moved to London for university to continue pursuing her creative multi-hyphenate skillset in dance, singing and a stint of studying fashion design.

Describing her drag in five words, Cara said: “Sexual goddess amongst mere mortals!” She added: “I was raised by a bunch of UK drag sisters, and so my drag was born and bred in London, where I’m well known as The Beyonce of the drag scene. It’s very important to me because when growing up, I never saw any black trans women on TV, and now I get a chance to represent black trans women. Although, I’m seriously shaking in my boots at the thought of performing in front of my idol RuPaul ! But hey, I’m mostly fearless, so let’s do it!”

Speaking about her game plan for the competition, she said: “I don’t have a game plan! I’m looking forward to the acting challenge, the Rusical and the girl group challenge, because I’ve been in a few girl groups. I have a bit of a reputation as a lip sync assassin, so my main goal is to send everyone home and stay at the top!”

Cara is the first Black trans woman to compete on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK. Because of the inevitable impact she will have on her respective communities, Cara told Gay Times: “I can’t wait to show people who are like me how to be powerful in our Blackness, transness and womanhood.” She is also the first American queen to sashay onto the stage.
