Francis Ngannou is a Cameroonian mixed martial artist. He is the current UFC Heavyweight Champion. Ngannou is popular for being the hardest recorded puncher in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) history. Ngannou was born and raised in the village of Batié, Cameroon. He grew up in extreme poverty. At the age of 10 years, he started working in a sand quarry in Batié because of a lack of funds.
At the age of 22, he started training in boxing, however, after some years of training, Ngannou stopped training due to an illness. When he was 26, Ngannou moved to Paris, France, to pursue professional boxing. Unfortunately, he was jailed for two months in Spain for illegally crossing the border. He later reached Paris, where he lived in the streets as he had no money or job to make both ends meet.
In August 2013, Ngannou started training for free under Didier Carmont. Ngannou made his MMA career debut in November 2013 and fought mostly in the French promotion 100% Fight, as well as other regional promotions in Europe. On December 19 2015, he made his UFC debut against Luis Henrique, at UFC on Fox 17. Ngannou won the fight via knockout in the second round. On April 10, 2016, at UFC Fight Night 86, Ngannou fought Curtis Blaydes, winning the fight via TKO. He has had a very colorful and successful career.
Most recently, during a rematch for the UFC Heavyweight Championship bout between him and Stipe Miocic which was scheduled on 27 March 2021 at UFC 260. Ngannou won the fight via knockout in round two. The fight took place at the UFC Apex facility in Enterprise, Nevada, United States. Ngannou won the Performance of the Night award. As a way of giving back to society, Ngannou has founded the Francis Ngannou Foundation, the foundation runs the first MMA gym in his native Cameroon, it also offers facilities for young people to have a place to train.
