He died on 7 December 2019 at Montnigside Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Citizen reported that CEO Roundtable of Tanzania (CEOrt) chairman, Sanjay Rughani confirmed his death in a statement on Sunday, December 8, 2019.

“Dear board members: This is news I would never have wanted to break to you but our dear friend Ali Mufuruki passed on last night at Morningside Hospital, Johannesburg in South Africa….,” Rughani said in his message to members of the CEOrt. He said Mr Mufuruki fell ill while in Dar es Salaam and was rushed to The Aga Khan Hospital where he was shortly evacuated to South Africa on Saturday in the afternoon.

Sanjay Rughani shared a statement on Twitter that said, “It is with immense sadness that we have learnt of the passing away of our Board member and great leader Ali Mufuruki – we send our deepest condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.

“Tanzania, our continent, and the world has today lost an incredible visionary leader who played many roles and impacted many lives, he will be missed.”

He added in a tweet, “Condolences to family & friends of @amufuruki at loss our @CEOrtTZ Board member and great leader – Tanzania, our continent and the world has today lost an incredible visionary leader who played many roles and impacted many lives, he will be missed.”
