Ellie Simmonds is a British former Paralympian swimmer. Simmonds shot to fame when she won her first Paralympic medal at the age of 13. She went on to become the youngest winner of the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year in 2008 and then the youngest recipient of an MBE at the age of 14.

She started swimming at the age of five and started competing against able-bodied children at the age of eight. At age 10, Simmonds’talent was spotted at a disability event and she was entered onto the British Swimming talent programme. She worked her way through to be selected as the youngest member of a senior British Swimming squad for the 2006 IPC World Championships at just 12 years old.

Simmonds was the youngest British athlete at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing at the age of 13. During the 2008 competition, she won gold medals in the 100m and 400m freestyle events.

Simmonds competed at the London 2012 Paralympics, winning four medals, including two Gold medals, and she broke two World records. Shehe followed up her Paralympic win with equally stunning performances at the IPC World Championships when she won consecutive Gold medals in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Simmonds returned with a Gold medal from the Rio 2016 Paralympics.

After competing at the Paralympics in Beijing in 2008, London in 2012, Rio in 2016 and Tokyo in 2021, Simmonds announced that she would be retiring from the sport.

Following her retirement from competitive swimming in 2020, Simmonds went on to present for BBC Sport, most recently for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. In April 2022, Simmonds made a BBC documentary titled Ellie Simmonds: A World Without Dwarfism?, in which she investigated a controversial new drug that promises to help children born with dwarfism grow to an average height.

On 10 January 2018, Swansea University awarded an honorary degree to Simmonds. The award was presented to the five-time Paralympic champion at the University’s degree ceremony for the College of Human and Health Sciences.

Presenting the award to Simmonds was Professor Hilary Lappin-Scott, Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Swansea University. “We are very proud that Ellie has used the University’s sports village, home to the Wales National Pool Swansea, as the base for her training, where the University hosted the International Paralympic Championships in 2014.

“Ellie Simmonds has captured both the hearts and minds of the British public. We at the University certainly have a special admiration for Ellie, and we are immensely proud to welcome such an inspirational figure into our honorary fellowship.”

“I’m counting down the minutes until it starts; learning to dance, meeting my partner and everyone else involved in the show. Plus wearing the sequins and all that, It’s going to be a blast.
