Jayde Adams Strictly Come Dancing 2022

On 6 August 2022, Jayde Adams was announced as a contestant on the twentieth series of Strictly Come Dancing. She joined previously announced contestants Will Mellor, Kym Marsh, Richie Anderson and Kaye Adams in the line-up for the show’s 20th series.

The award-winning comedian, actor and presenter said: “Since I watched the first series in 2004, I feel like every step I’ve taken in my career over the last 11 years was to be on Strictly. I cannot begin to express the emotions I am feeling, this means so much to me and my family. I’ve always watched it, apart from a brief hiatus in 2011 as I was relentlessly gigging every weekend (to try and get on Strictly). I’ve been a massive fan of the show for years. I feel like I’m watching myself in a dream and I can’t believe I’ve manifested this. Holding this in has been torture for me!”

From the age of five to 17, Jayde Adams would regularly take part in freestyle disco dancing competitions with her older sister Jenna.

I wasn’t a very confident dancer,” said Adams. “I’ve always been fat. I’m a really good dancer, but in freestyle disco dancing, back when I used to do it in the 90s, there was a real stipulation over what you looked like when you did it.

“My sister really fitted that mould. I didn’t. We used to have to dance together because we were sisters and it was easier. And I’ll be honest with you, I think I held her back a bit.”

In 2013, after splitting with her partner, Adams toured Spain in a production of Much Ado About Nothing with a friend who is a transvestite.

Jayde Adams Parents

Adams’ mother, Gail, introduced her to dance classes. “My mum used to drag me to dance classes. I was always the biggest in the class and hated it but now I’ve got the moves.”

Her dad’s family grew up in Brentry, where her aunt had a dance school. She attended freestyle disco dancing classes with her sister for 12 years.

“I never won anything, mind. All the girls who did it were so athletic and I was born 16 stone – I never knew that the reason I didn’t win was because of my size, I used to think it was because I had asthma…My mum made me do it for 12 years, even though I failed so often – and it’s the reason why I’m so resilient to performing in comedy. I think kids should be rubbish at something when they are younger. It makes you a better at whatever you do when you have something to fight for.”

Jayde Adams Sister

Jenna and Jayde Adams took part in dance competitions together for 12 years as children. In 2005, Jenna had a seizure out of the blue. It turned out she had a brain tumour. “I was studying at university when Kane arrived at my halls of residence to tell me Jenna had a brain tumour. I had no idea what to do, how to react or what to say.”

Jenna died six years later, at the age of 28. The death of her older sister, Jenna Adams, in 2011 at the age of 28, was the catalyst for Adams to focus on stand-up after drifting for most of her adult life.

“She was my idol. She had a brain tumour and died of a massive epileptic seizure. Grieving isn’t fun but it’s much better now. After the biopsy it was like a movie in the hospital. Everyone else left the room and she grabbed my hand and said, ‘Can you make everyone laugh because everyone is looking at me as if I’m about to die and I don’t like it’. So that’s what I did.”

In November 2014, Adams hosted a charity ball for Brain Tumour Support and the Epilepsy Society at the Marriott Hotel in Bristol.

“I’m fitter than a lot of skinny women. I can do the splits. I don’t do badly with blokes, I won’t lie. I don’t feel I have to apologise for the way I look. If I go to an audition and I’m asked to go on a diet I’ll walk out.”
