Asmaa is a contestant on The Great British Sewing Bee 2023 and a Consultant Breast Surgeon. According to the BBC, she lives in Cardiff but was born in Iraq where she learnt her love of sewing.
During the Iraq and Iran War, Asmaa would spend her time watching and learning from her grandmother who was a seamstress. She would hand sew the most fabulous wardrobe for her dolls, using any scraps and remnants she could find.
After finally escaping Iraq, at the age of 14, Asmaa and her family moved to Durham where her father was working as a scientist. At 18, she moved to Cardiff to study medicine, where she is now a consultant breast surgeon at a cancer centre.
Her wardrobe is mostly self-made as she likes to create brightly coloured modesty clothing to match her designer shoes – her one indulgence to herself. She also specialises in making underwear, creating sets to coordinate with her outfits, and she is even known to have made post-op bras for her breast cancer patients. Her style is feminine, modest, and classic.
Apart from sewing, Asmaa enjoys knitting, crocheting and going to the theatre or rock concerts with her teenage daughter.

Asmaa is one of the sewers competing in The Great British Sewing Bee Series 9 on BBC One. The popular BBC show, presented by Sara Pascoe, will see 12 crafty contestants show off their skills to the series’ resident judges Esme Young and Patrick Grant for the coveted title of Britain’s best amateur sewer.
Days after she was announced as a contestant on Series 9 of The Great British Sewing Bee, she wrote on Instagram: “What an incredible week! I am truly overwhelmed by the outpouring of support I’ve had from family, friends, former and current colleagues, Insta family and my amazing patients!
“Mind you I can’t deny having moments when I’ve thought what the heck was I thinking. Too late now right?
“Oh well I’m just going to carry on enjoying this new adventure and see where it takes me. Thank you again to all you amazing, lovely people.”
