Ajay Kumar is Chef patron at the award-winning restaurant Swadish by Ajay Kumar in Glasgow, Scotland. He is a contestant on the Great British Menu 2024.

Born in Punjab, India, Ajay moved to Scotland in 2009 and opened his own restaurant ‘Swadish by Ajay Kumar’ in 2019. Swadish is a 2 Rosette holding, national award-winning fine dining restaurant that combines high-quality seasonal Scottish ingredients with traditional and modern Indian culinary techniques.

Growing up, Ajay was inspired by his father, who was the cook of the family. His food journey began in India in 2003 – with many hours spent in the kitchens of Master Chefs in India, Malaysia and Singapore – before settling in Scotland.

Swadish has been awarded 2 AA Rosettes. In 2019, Ajay was crowned the Scottish Curry Champion at the SPICE Awards. Swadish also won the Best Special menu category for its innovative menu and was highly recommended in the Fine Dining category.

Commenting on his award, Kumar said, “This is an amazing achievement and I am so pleased that our hard work has been recognised and awarded in this way.

“There were so many fantastic chefs taking part and the competition was tough and that’s what makes winning this all the sweeter. I look forward to serving up the award-winning dishes to our customers!”

In 2022, Swadish won a total of six awards, including Best Fine Dining Restaurant at the Prestige Awards, Best Indian Establishment at the Food Awards Scotland, and Scotland’s Best Indian Restaurant at the Scottish Entertainment & Hospitality Awards. On November 28, 2022, the Indian restaurant was crowned the Best Restaurant in Scotland at the prestigious British Curry Awards 2022. Other awards include Outstanding Indian Restaurant of the Year at the Scottish Curry Awards 2023.

Ajay Kumar is a contestant on Series 19 of the Great British Menu. He is one of the four chefs representing Scotland in the BBC Two cooking show alongside Kevin Dalgliesh, Head Chef at Amuse by Kevin Dalgliesh; Calum Montgomery, Chef Patron at Edinbane Lodge and David Millar, Executive Chef at Jupiter Artland. Ajay’s menu celebrates Scottish Olympic athletes.

Ajay announced the news on Instagram, writing, “I can’t even express the feeling of how proud and honoured I was to have been invited on the Great British Menu to represent Scotland.

“I had an amazing time filming with some incredible chefs and the whole experience has been a real eye opener to the level of skill they brought.” He added: “It was a pleasure to meet and compete with some of the best chefs in Scotland.”

If successful in the Scottish regional heat, Ajay will then go head-to-head with chefs from across the country who have won their regional title to compete in the banquet finale.
