Tony R is a contestant on The Great British Sewing Bee 2023, a cyclist and postman in Cornwall. A popular figure around the Cornish coast, Tony can be spotted delivering post, skateboarding along the promenade or whizzing down the country lanes on one of his many bikes.
According to the BBC, it’s in stark contrast to his previous life as a high-flying manager in a manufacturing firm, jetting round the globe and living in the Far East.
He has always liked to keep busy, and used to enjoy crocheting and knitting on his long-haul flights. But three years ago after changing careers, he decided to pull out his wife’s old sewing machine to sew a bag for his knitting. He’s since made himself cycling gear, and has developed his own wardrobe which is influenced by 90’s skater fashion.
He is secretary for his local mountain bike club, and has competed in numerous ultra-marathons. He enjoys sea swimming, can juggle fire and is known to pull out a card trick as an ice-breaker.

Tony R is one of the sewers competing in The Great British Sewing Bee Series 9 on BBC One. The popular BBC show, presented by Sara Pascoe, will see 12 crafty contestants show off their skills to the series’ resident judges Esme Young and Patrick Grant for the coveted title of Britain’s best amateur sewer.
After his first day in the sewing room, Tony wrote on Instagram: “Really had no idea a:what I’d got myself into b:could I cut it with all the other great sewers I’d met the night before!
“Those first minutes walking into the sewing room, then lining up, and then Patrick and Esme walk in and give us the patterns was super surreal. And then we’re off!!!! OMG we’d actually started! It was a baptism of fire, but I’m prepared to get burnt again if it feels this good!”
