Simion Hawtin-Smith is a furniture upholsterer, vintage chair specialist and expert on BBC One’s Money for Nothing. He was a presenter on Grand Designs Live’s Design and Build Forum. He runs the successful Reloved Upholstery from his studio in Stockport, Greater Manchester. His company offers bespoke upholstery services and creative workshops for budding furniture fanatics.
Simion has always been interested in interiors, especially when it comes to making and restoring things. When he was a child, his mum caught him stripping the dark stain off his bedroom furniture to bring it back to the pale wood.
After studying design at college, he ended up working in the bar industry, before opening his own cafe and art gallery in Manchester. He worked hard to perfect the interior, designing it himself and working on the upholstery. He followed this up by renovating a house in France – this proved to be a defining moment, leading him to learn how to properly upholster furniture. Simion met upholsterer Dennis Gilligan, who taught Simion how to upholster the traditional way.

‘Dennis was one of the most remarkable people I have ever met. He was an upholsterer from just 14 years old, an Olympic wrestler and a true gentleman. He was my friend and upholstery guru, teaching me everything he knew and leaving me with the traditional upholstery skills that I use at Reloved today.
‘[Dennis] came to my studio every week and taught me the sort of things that can only be passed down from one generation to the next, knowledge that has influenced the quality of my work and ultimately cemented my lifelong love affair with restoration.’
