Richard Biggs is a binoculars, telescopes and microscopes repair specialist and expert on The Repair Shop on BBC One. He is the founder and owner of Action Optics, a binoculars and telescopes repair workshop located on the outskirts of Hythe, Hampshire near the eastern edge of the New Forest.
Richard has been repairing optical and photographic equipment since 1963. However, he currently focuses on binoculars, telescopes and microscopes.
Binocular repairer Richard Biggs opened up about his career in an interview with BirdForum. He worked for Wallace Heaton in Bond Street for 15 months from mid 1963 on the Service Counter and dealt with varied photo and optical equipment.
He joined the fledgling Russian Equipment importers (Technical & Optical Equipment (London) Ltd) in 1964, where he handled everything from flash guns, still and cine cameras, projectors and microscopes, as well as telescopes and binoculars. After 11 years, he was General Service Manager in north London with 108 staff in his department dealing with Quality Control and After Sales Service.
He moved from London to Swindon, joining Hanimex as General Service Manager. Here, he handled consumer electronics, photographic and optical equipment and even x-ray film processors.
In the early 1980s, Richard left Hanimex to set up his own workshop. During the early years, the customers using his workshop’s services included AICO, Tasco, Mirador, Marchwood, Eschenbach, Lisenfeld, Dowling & Rowe, Monk Optics, Jessops and London Camera Exchange.

“It has been a privilege to work in The Barn for the TV program, The Repair Shop,” Richard said. “I have “made” 10 films and been in the background of a few more. Everyone is as lovely in real life as they are on the programs.”
