Samantha ‘Sam’ Marsden is a British master hand engraver and expert on the BBC One’s The Repair Shop. She is the co-founder and co-managing Director of Sam James Engraving, an award-winning hand and machine engraving company based in Clerkenwell, London.
Sam and her business partner James Neville launched Sam James Engraving in 2011. Their combined expertise of over 50 years ensures that all manor of engraving can be undertaken by award-winning craftsmen to the highest standard, from simple inscriptions to intricate cutting for enamel and fine portraiture.
Sam James Engraving specialise in pictorial portraits, scenes and cutting for enamel offering a full professional service to the trade and private clientele. Their portfolio includes inscriptions, heraldic engraving, jewellery, corporate, carving and antiquities.
Sam did her pre-apprenticeship in engraving at the Sir John Cass School of Art and Design. She completed a Goldsmiths’ apprenticeship under George Lukes, a highly respected craftsman. She apprenticed with him for five years and later joined his company for another 18 years before taking a break to have her family.
Sam was the first female and double award winner of the Jacques Cartier Memorial Award in both 1993 and 2002. In 2002 her silver Casket depicting the medieval Chamber of the House of Lords was selected for its meticulous, detailed, controlled and artistic use of engraving.
Sam wanted to be a pathologist from a young age. She decided to drop her goal of becoming a pathologist to become a gunsmith engraver after she was inspired by the guns she saw in her father’s workshop. Her father was in the gun making business.
