Sam Lomas is the Head Chef at Glebe House, a restaurant and guest house in Southleigh, near Colyton, Devon. At the age of 18, he won a competition as an apprentice at River Cottage with celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, where his love for sustainable practices, foraging and seasonal cooking developed.

Sam grew up in Kerridge, outside of Macclesfield in the North West. He attended The Fallibroome Academy from 2006 – 2012, according to his Linkedin profile. He graduated from the River Cottage Chefs’ School and served as an apprentice chef at River Cottage from August 2013 to October 2014.

In July 2013, Sam Lomas was crowned River Cottage’s Rising Star 2013 and the face of its Young Chef Apprenticeship Scheme by Hugh and the judges following a fine performance in the Grand Final at River Cottage HQ in front of over 400 guests.

“I’m incredibly excited to have won,” Sam told Seachange. “Food, and indeed how food is made, has been a passion of mine for almost as long as I can remember. To have been named Rising Star whilst up against such supportive, talented and passionate finalists as Freyja, Florence, Ian and Jack, is an absolute privilege. The whole process of the River Cottage Rising Star competition has broadened my food horizons.”

Chef Sam Lomas from Macclesfield is representing the North West region on Great British Menu 2022. His menu on Great British Menu celebrates British Broadcasting, champions radio legends and classic northern drama, Happy Valley.

Sam announced that he was taking part in BBC2 show on Instagram. He wrote: “When I was growing up I often used to watch [Great British Menu] after school. I don’t know whether 12 year old me was necessarily their target audience, but seeing amazing chefs like Jeremy Lee, Angela Hartnett and Stephen Terry in action really showed me that cooking was an actual job that I could actually do.

“If you had told me back then that in 2022 that I would be competing for the North West in Great British Menu I would have been seriously baffled.

“But here we are; it’s actually happening. It was a real privilege to take part in and I’m terrified and excited in equal measure see how it goes.”
