2017 saw Laurie play in his second appearance at The Open Championship (his first as a professional) at Royal Birkdale, where he finished in 35th place. He narrowly missed retaining his playing rights but regained them at Qualifying school for the third successive time – a European Tour first.

In 2019, Laurie played on the Challenge Tour, narrowly missing out on a first professional win in a play off in the KPMG Trophy, Belgium. He ended the season in 43rd position, before finishing 5th at Qualifying school to earn his card for the 2020 European Tour season.

Laurie enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2020 finishing 19th in the Race to Dubai thanks to 5 Top 10 performances including two well-fought runner up finishes at the Portugal Masters and the Italian Open, and a Top 5 finish at his first DP World Tour Championship.

Laurie represented the British and Irish Lions in 2010 against Europe in the St. Andrews Trophy and was selected to play the Eisenhower Trophy for England.

He said at the time of entering the multi-year deal: “I played Mizuno irons for a number of seasons previously – but never really considered them for metal-woods. I hit the Mizuno driver and fairways to be open minded and was really surprised how much they’d moved on in the last few years. The driver is as fast as anything I’ve tested, but really stable with it. I know that the next few years are crucial if I want to meet all the goals I’ve set myself – I’ve surprised myself going with Mizuno through the bag. But feel really good about it.”

Interests

The Bath-born European Tour golfer also has a passion for Bath rugby and is a season ticket holder at the Rec. In a past interview with the Rugby Journal, Laurie revealed how he went to the Rec from about the age of 2 with his father.

He said at the time: “I think, at the time, under fours could go with the parents for free and just sit on their lap. I think my dad was still carrying me into games claiming I was under four until I was about seven. As we used to get close to the gate’s he’d be like, ‘right, hop on my back’. Eventually he had to succumb and buy me a season ticket too. We started off in the open stand, but he operated on one of the players [he’s a surgeon], so they did him a solid and got him a couple of tickets in the covered stand. I think it was about a 20-year-waiting list for that stand back then.”
