Ruchee Gurung is a Love Island 2023 contestant and beautician from Sutton in South West London. She was born in Hong Kong and raised in Nepal from the age of 2. She attended an American school in Kathmandu, Nepal. The beautician works at her auntie’s salon in London’s Marylebone.

In an exclusive interview with MailOnline, Ruchee revealed she was born in Hong Kong and then moved to Nepal when she was two years old.

She said: “I was born in Hong Kong and then I moved to Nepal when I was two and a half because my mum was working, and my dad is a pilot so travels a lot so he couldn’t look after me.

“In Hong Kong it was really expensive for my mum to get a nanny, so she left me with her sister who raised me, so one of my aunties raised me.

“Then I moved to Kathmandu, which is the capital, when I was like 7/8 and my grandma raised me there because he was still travelling.

“I went to an American school in Nepal and when I moved to London with my mum, I actually had an American accent.

“When someone p***es me off the accent comes out because I have moved here and picked up the English accent but certain words or letters, I say… sometimes my friends say, ‘repeat yourself again’ and I say, ‘no!’ Because my accent is going to come out.

“I had a good childhood, I grew up with my cousins, I never felt like my parents weren’t around because I would speak to them every single day. I have always been quite close to my family.”

Why Love Island and why now?

I’m single and looking for love, and it’s the perfect opportunity for me to find someone. I’m a relationship kind of girl, but so far it’s not worked out for me. So I’m looking forward to hopefully finding the right person in the Villa.

What’s your ‘elevator pitch’ for why someone should want to date you?

I’m really caring, when I’m with someone I’m all about them. I’m also really loyal and love doing nice things for the people that are special to me. My love language is gift giving, so I’m a real giver when it comes to relationships.

What gives you the ‘ick’?

Guys with no ambition. I also get the ick if I see a guy wearing white jeans and red trainers. Another one is super skinny jeans when they look like leggings. Fashion is such an important thing for me. If I go on a date and the guy isn’t wearing something I like, I’m going home.
