Rose Schmits Biography – Rose Schmits Wiki
Rose Schmits is a London-based Dutch Ceramic artist and technician on the Great Pottery Throw Down. She joined The Great Pottery Throw down on its fourth series as the new studio technician. She replaced pottery technician Rich Miller in 2021, and oversees the potter’s work as it is fired in the kiln.
Born and raised in the historic Dutch city of Delft, Rose moved to London for a BA degree in Fine Art at City and Guilds of London Art School which she finished in 2019 with a degree show installation consisting of 283 earthenware vessels. During the three years of her degree she fell in love with ceramics and decided to embrace the ceramic heritage of Delft and use it to make work that tells her story as a trans woman from a historic Dutch city renowned for its pottery. Her work takes the traditional blue and white pottery and uses this technique to make unorthodox, bodily vessels that question bodies, gender and our relationship with heritage.
Following her degree, she became one of the founding members at Studio Pottery London. Here she evolved her work from hand-coiling to wheel throwing. After months of dedicated work at the studio she took up technician work and soon after was appointed studio coordinator.
Her work has been shown at the British Ceramics Biennial 2019, as part of the Fresh award, and at the Exceptional show at Collyer Bristow Gallery 2019/2020.
On her personal website, the Great Pottery Throw Down technician says: “My ceramic practice is a way for me to delve into my identity as a trans woman from Delft, the Netherlands. Using the Delftware pottery technique to create pieces that reflect my experiences as a trans person having altered my body and identity allows me to gain ownership of the struggles of transitioning as well as remember where I came from.”
She adds: “Being from Delft I see the iconic blue and white ceramics as symbolic of a constrictive past, both my personal past and a societal past. Breaking with the traditional designs of the pottery and use the techniques to make pieces that are bodily, phallic, queer and looking like growing tendrils, imposes “transness” onto a traditional past. My ceramic pieces embody my experience of acknowledging my origins whilst fully celebrating the ownership over my body and identity the trans experience has given me.”
