Ray Clarke Biography – Ray Clarke Wiki
Ray Clarke, born Raymond Elsworth Clarke, is an upholsterer and soft furnisher based in east London. He has appeared on the BBC’s Money for Nothing and Salvage Hunters: The Restorers on Quest and Discovery Plus.
Ray originally trained in menswear fashion and printed textile design. After graduation, he started working within the fashion industry in retail. However, he struggled to get into a design-related position and started a clothing label based on leisure/Cyclewear.
After the clothing label business failed, he took up the opportunity to restore a pair of office chairs for a friend he met through a period of cycle couriering. Relying on his experience and design training, he took on recovering the chairs and realised he loved the ability to reimagine and recreate furniture. The idea of re-directing his skills and re-training in upholstery and soft furnishings was born.
He enrolled at London Metropolitan University. After graduation, he took work experience for several different established upholstery companies. He later set up his workshop.
He owns Ray Clarke Upholstery and Design, providing various upholstery services, creating bespoke upholstery, re-upholstery, soft furnishings, and original textile print designs, using traditional or modern techniques.
Ray has appeared on BBC1’s “Money For Nothing” and Channel 4 shows “George Clarkes Old House New Home” and “Kevin McClouds Supersized Challenge”, as well as “Salvagehunters: The Restorers” on Quest TV/ Discovery+. He has also been featured in The Sunday Times Supplement and British Vogue.
Ray is a full member of the Association of Master Upholsterers & Soft Furnishers (AMUSF).
