Sima Patel Biography – Sima Patel Wiki

Sima G. Patel is a judge of the Michigan 2nd District Court of Appeals. She was appointed to the Michigan Court of Appeals by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on February 3, 2022. Judge Patel is the first East-Indian American to sit on a Michigan Appellate Court, and one of only three minority members of the Michigan Court of Appeals.

Her appointment was made to fill a partial term, which expires at twelve o’clock noon on January 1, 2023, after the passing of Judge Jonathan Tukel in September 2021. If Patel wishes to serve the remainder of Judge Tukel’s term, expiring January 1, 2027, she would be required to run for reelection in November of 2022.

Prior to her appointment, Judge Patel served as a senior appellate attorney at Fieger Law and practiced in the areas of appellate and negligence law.

She previously clerked for six years in Michigan’s Supreme Court under Justices Elizabeth A. Weaver and Diane Hathaway. In 2007, Judge Patel helped pen Justice Weaver’s dissenting opinion in the case MI Citizens for Water Conservation v. Nestle Waters, which argued for the rights of private citizens to be allowed to bring suit in Michigan.

Judge Patel earned her Juris Doctor degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School and Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Colorado. She is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the Michigan Association for Justice, the South Asian Bar Association, and the Women Lawyers’ Association of Michigan.
