Omar Jimenez born Omar Fernando Jimenez is a CNN Correspondent based in Chicago. He started with CNN in 2017 for the network’s affiliate service, CNN Newsource, based in Washington, D.C. Prior to joining CNN, Jimenez worked for WBAL-TV in Baltimore, Maryland where he was a reporter and fill-in anchor. He also worked as a full-time reporter for WGEM-TV, the local NBC station in Quincy, Illinois.
His first internship was at NBC News, working out of their Chicago bureau. He got his start in journalism working for NBC News at the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida. He attended Kennesaw Mountain high school. He graduated in 2015 from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. At Northwestern, he played on the varsity men’s basketball team.
Jimenez was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, and grew up outside of Atlanta. He attended Kennesaw Mountain High School where he worked for the school’s television station, “KMTV,” and played varsity basketball for three years. From there, he walked on to the basketball team at Northwestern University where he played for two years. He has hosted both the 2013 and 2014 Big Buck Hunter World Championships, has acted in several plays at Northwestern and raps under the pseudonym, “OJ Tropicana.” He used those skills to win a rap competition on NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Jimenez is also fluent in Spanish.
