Mark Sager is a Canadian politician, mayor-elect of West Vancouver, lawyer and owner of several small businesses. He previously served as West Van’s mayor from 1990 to 1996 when he was in his 30s. He ran for mayor again in 2018 but was unsuccessful.
Sager is the founding member of Sager Nairne LLP law firm. He has experience in a broad variety of areas, including municipal law, real estate, land use, shareholder disputes and complex commercial matters. He is a member of the Law Society of British Columbia, the Canadian Bar Association and the British Columbia Roster Society.
In 2020, the Law Society of B.C. fined Sager $20,000 for professional misconduct after an investigation found Sager directed a staff member to prepare a will for his godmother that named Sager as a beneficiary, and for accepting a $75,000 gift from his godmother, without her having received independent advice from a lawyer.
Sager is an avid sportsman and pilot. He is rated to fly multi-engine aircrafts, including jets and seaplanes. He loves Crossfit, skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, sailing, cycling, windsurfing, travel, golf and swimming. Mark raced the Victoria to Maui Yacht Race and won the Andreas Schurller Memorial Trophy for Best Navigator. He is also a member of the West Vancouver Yacht Club and the Capilano Golf and Country Club.
He has been a diplomatic guest of both the United States Government and the Government of China.
Sager donates a considerable amount of time and energy in supporting arts organizations on the North Shore and was Chair of the North Shore Mayors’ Golf Tournament for several years and is currently a director with the Ambleside Dundarave Business Improvement Association.

Mark Sager is the son of Henry William “Hank” Sager and Shirley Scrivener. His father, Hank, was born in 1921 in Port Simpson, B.C., and passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Veterans Lodge in Victoria, BC on September 30, 2021. He was 100 years old.
Henry was born in Port Simpson on March 23, 1921. Henry’s father, Dr. William Sager, moved the family from England to be the family doctor in the remote Indigenous community. In 1926, the family left the northern village and moved south to Port Coquitlam. The Sager family eventually made a move to Burnaby.
Mark’s father married his first wife Audrey Aitchison in June 1941. They had two children Gail and Greg. Audrey became ill with cancer and passed away before the age of 30. Henry then met Shirley Scrivener in 1953 and married. Henry and Shirley had two children, Mark and Suzanne.
Mark is the grandson of Dr. William Sager and Esther Mary Duckers (Hettie) and nephew to Shirley Morrison, Arthur Sager, Elsie Wilson, Murray Sager and Melvin Sager. He has a sister, Suzanne.
Mark Sager West Vancouver Mayor
Mark Sager was elected mayor of West Vancouver in the municipal election held on October 15, 2022. Sager won the race with 6,082 votes, followed by incumbent Mary-Ann Booth with 2,833 votes, former council member Marcus Wong with 2,436 votes and real estate agent Teresa De Cotiis with 80 votes.
Those elected to council are incumbents Nora Gambioli, Sharon Thompson and Peter Lambur, newcomers Linda Watt and Scott Snider, as well as Christine Cassidy, who served one term on council from 2014-2018.
Sager released the following statement after his landslide win: “I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the community of West Vancouver for electing me as your Mayor. I love this community and I am truly honoured that you have given me the opportunity to serve once again. Congratulations to councillors-elect Linda Watt, Peter Lambur, Sharon Thompson, Scott Snider, Christine Cassidy, and Nora Gambioli on their victories. This council is made up of incumbents, familiar faces and new faces and the mix of experience and fresh ideas will bring a balanced approach to your council. I would also like to congratulate those elected to school board and express my sincere thanks to all of the candidates who put their name forward to run for council.
“I would like to thank the other mayoral candidates for their dedication to West Vancouver over the years. To our current Mayor Mary-Ann Booth, who has served our community on school board, as a councillor and as Mayor. To Marcus Wong, who has served as a Councillor for the past four years and to Teresa De Cotiis for putting her name forward to run for Mayor.
“I am very much looking forward to getting to work on the commitments made in my first 100 days in public office which include: ensuring our Ambleside Local Area Plan is on track for completion in 2023; creating better communication between council, staff and the community; re-establishing the Community Finance Commission; increasing our council meeting schedule to accommodate our work load; limiting our council meetings to three hours; meeting with every department head and key staff member; and creating open and transparent dialogue between the public and staff.
