Lucy McCallum is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory. She took up the top job at the ACT Supreme Court in March 2022, when she moved from the NSW Supreme Court to replace Helen Murrell.

Prior to this, McCallum served as a judge on the NSW Court of Appeal from 2019 to 2022 and as a judge of the Common Law Division of the NSW Supreme Court from 2008.

McCallum attended the University of New South Wales where she graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in philosophy.

McCallum commenced her legal career in 1986 as a solicitor at Mallesons Stephen Jaques, specialising in commercial litigation, and then joined the Director of Public Prosecutions, firstly for the Commonwealth, and subsequently for Queensland.

She was called to the Bar in 1991, where she practised at Sixth Floor Selborne Wentworth Chambers, took silk in 2005, and was appointed to the Bar Council in 2007. During her time at the Bar, she had a wide and varied practice including administrative law, environmental law, professional negligence, defamation, trade practices, and competition law.

In 2008, McCallum was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in the Common Law Division. She was the Defamation List judge from 2014 to 2018.

In 2016, McCallum was appointed Chair of the NSW Judicial Commission Ngara Yura Committee which aims to increase awareness among judicial officers about contemporary Aboriginal and social-cultural issues, and their effect on Aboriginal people in the justice system.

In February 2019, McCallum was elevated to the New South Wales Court of Appeal where she sat on a wide range of matters until her Honour’s appointment as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory.

On 8 March 2022, McCallum was sworn in as the sixth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory.
