Kamalei Kawa’a is a Hawaiian singer, songwriter, musician, and hula dancer. He appears as a contestant on The Voice season 25.

27-year-old Kamalei is a member of the Hawaiian music group Nā Wai `Ehā.

He attended Ke Kula Kaiapuni o Maui through his formative years and graduated from Baldwin High School in 2014. Kamalei Kawa’a has since earned an associate degree in Hawaiian studies from the University of Hawaii Maui College. Kamalei is fluent in the Hawaiian Language.

Like hula, Kamalei fell in love with Hawaiian music at a young age. He started playing the ʻukulele at the age of 4 and has been singing and playing Hawaiian music ever since and won a falsetto singing competition at age 15. In 2015, he entered the Richard Hoʻopiʻi Leo Kiʻekiʻe Falsetto Competition. He was awarded first place that year.

In high school, he and his brother started a band, Nā Wai ʻEhā, named after the four famous waters of Maui. They performed in Japan, up and down the West Coast, and around the islands of Hawaii. They even received a Grammy nomination in the regional roots category.

Kamalei is also an accomplished hula dancer with Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi, under the direction of Nā Kumu Hula ‘Iliahi and Haunani Paredes. He has been with the hālau for 14 years.

A full-time teacher at Seabury Hall and director of the He Hāʻupu Aloha hula program, Kamalei credits hula, his kumu hula, and his parents for inspiring him to sing Hawaiian music.

Kamalei started performing solo in 2021 and has since released two singles. During the day, he teaches Hawaiian Studies and Hula, and he pursues his passion as a musician at night.

Through his voice, Kamalei strives to increase recognition of Hawaii’s talented artistry and share the spirit of aloha with the world.

Kamalei Kawa’a is a contestant on the 25th season of The Voice. He took part in the blind auditions and performed “Redemption Song” by Bob Marley and The Wailers.

The Voice Coach Rapper Chance turned around on the opening line. Late in the song, coach Reba turned, joining Chance. Chance loved the song choice and said it is important to have someone like Kamalei on the show.

Reba agreed with Chance’s feedback and added, “That song touched my heart. I knew that I had heard it before but not like the way you sang it. It was very spiritual to me and that’s why I turned around.”

With two Coaches to choose from, Kamalei joined Team Chance.

“Kamalei is a force. I think that he’s a star. He has a voice like no other, the control is always there, it’s almost like a studio recording,” Chance said. “He’s got a great story to tell, and I’m happy to help him tell it.”
