Hamish Harding is a British businessman, aviator and explorer. Harding is the chairman of Action Aviation, an international company which deals with sales and operations in the business aviation industry, based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Harding, who is also a pilot and adventurer, also holds at least four Guinness World Records, including the fastest circumnavigation of Earth by airplane while crossing both poles and the “longest time spent traversing the deepest part of the ocean on a single dive.”

In December 2016, Harding accompanied astronaut Buzz Aldrin to the South Pole. Aldrin, at 86 years old, became the oldest person to visit the South Pole.

British billionaire explorer Hamish Harding is among the five people on board the missing Titanic tourist submersible vessel, the Titan, after it submerged on Sunday (18 June) morning, and lost contact with its support ship, the Canadian research vessel Polar Prince, about an hour and 45 minutes into the submerge.

Harding took to Facebook on Saturday (17 June) to announce that he was joining OceanGate Expeditions for its Titanic mission. He wrote: “I am proud to finally announce that I joined OceanGate Expeditions for their RMS TITANIC Mission as a mission specialist on the sub going down to the Titanic.

“Due to the worst winter in Newfoundland in 40 years, this mission is likely to be the first and only manned mission to the Titanic in 2023. A weather window has just opened up and we are going to attempt a dive tomorrow. We started steaming from St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada yesterday and are planning to start dive operations around 4am tomorrow morning. Until then we have a lot of preparations and briefings to do.

“The team on the sub has a couple of legendary explorers, some of which have done over 30 dives to the RMS Titanic since the 1980s including PH Nargeolet.”

On Monday (19 June) – as news of the missing submersible broke – Mr Harding’s stepson Brian Szasz confirmed that his stepfather was on board the vessel when it went missing.

“Hamish Harding, my step father, has gone missing on submarine. Thoughts and prayers,” he wrote on Facebook, sharing family photos and articles.

The other passengers on board include renowned French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet, founder of OceanGate Expeditions Stockton Rush, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood.
