Suleman Dawood is the son of British-Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood. A family statement described teenager Suleman as a “big fan of science fiction literature and learning new things”, and having an interest in Rubik’s cubes and playing volleyball.

Suleman recently graduated from ACS Cobham International in Surrey. ACS International School Cobham is an independent school north of the A3 that welcomes nearly 1,200 pupils aged two to 18 from across the world, according to the latest report from the Independent Schools Inspectorate.

According to local media reports, ACS International School Cobham confirmed Suleman is a recent graduate and said the school community’s thoughts are with the family. Head of school, Barnaby Sandow, said: “The ACS International School Cobham community is deeply concerned by the news that recent graduate, Suleman Dawood, and his father are on board the submersible which has gone missing during a dive to the Titanic’s wreck.”

He added: “Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.”

In a statement seen by the BBC, the family said Suleman is currently a university student.

Suleman Dawood is the son of British businessman Shahzada and Christine Dawood. He has a sister, Alina. Suleman Dawood’s family lives in Surbiton, south-west London, but were spending a month in Canada prior to the dive. He is the nephew of Sabrina Dawood.

He is the grandson of Hussain Dawood, who is the chairman of the Pakistan-based Dawood Hercules Corporation as well as the Engro Corporation, responsible for manufacturing chemicals and fertilisers, food and energy respectively.

Suleman Dawood, 19, and his father, Shahzada Dawood, 48, are two of the occupants of the missing Titanic submersible. The submersible vessel carrying five tourists bound for the Titanic shipwreck went missing on June 18, 2023. The vessel, named Titan and owned by OceanGate Expeditions, was set to show passengers the Titanic shipwreck up close, but communication was lost with the vessel just under two hours into its journey.

Passengers paid $250,000 for the trip to venture close to 13,123 feet deep into the ocean. Other passengers on board include
OceanGate Inc CEO and founder Stockton Rush, British billionaire Hamish Harding and Paul-Henry Nargeolet, a former commander who served in the French Navy for 25 years.

A statement from the Dawood family said: “As of now, contact has been lost with their submersible craft and there is limited information available.

“We are very grateful for the concern being shown by our colleagues and friends and would like to request everyone to pray for their safety while granting the family privacy at this time. The family is well looked after and are praying to Allah for the safe return of their family members.”

In a statement seen by the BBC, the family described Mr Dawood as “a loving father” and said Suleman is currently a university student.

“Shahzada is a loving father to Suleman and Alina, husband to Christine, brother to three siblings, and son to Hussain & Kulsum Dawood. His 19-year-old son, Suleman Dawood, is currently a university student,” the statement said.
