Drew Pritchard Biography – Drew Pritchard Wiki

Drew Pritchard is an antiques dealer, restorer and the star of the Discovery and Quest’s Salvage Hunters. He has been dealing independently since 1993 having trained initially as a stained glass restorer and designer.

Drew grew up in Glan Conwy, a village in North Wales. He became interested in becoming an antiques dealer at a young age. It was his father, a sign writer, who taught him how to look at things. Speaking about how he got into the antiques trade, Drew told Homes & Antiques Magazine:

“I can’t remember a time when I was not completely absorbed by antiques. My father collected antiques, instruments and motorbikes and, as a result, I was immersed in the unusual and the old from a young age. What really got me excited wasn’t the pristine museum pieces that we saw on family holidays but the rusty, broken stuff I found in the fields around my childhood home of Glan Conwy, a village in north Wales.

“During the summer holidays, my best friend (and, much later, Salvage Hunter cohort) Tee [John] and I scoured the beaches, local tips and countryside looking for pushbikes, car badges, oars and boat paraphernalia – anything that people had thrown away. We would sell what we’d salvaged at the side of the road to buy sweets and magazines.

“I loved the thrill of the hunt and decided that I wanted to be an antiques dealer by the time I was 11, but I couldn’t figure out how to raise the amount of money you needed to launch an antiques business. The way in for me was to become a restorer who found broken objects and added value to them.”

Antiques Dealer

Drew left school and took an apprenticeship working for a stained-glass restorer. Years later, he set up on his own, working in a room by the side of his father’s garage, dealing in stained-glass windows. He began his career as an antiques dealer in the late 1980s, with £200 in his pocket, a battered old VW Beetle for transport, and no clue about the business.

“The antiques world was shrouded in secrecy: it was highly competitive and dealers wouldn’t reveal a single thing,” he said. “I couldn’t afford a premises of my own, so my first site was next to Dad’s office in my parents’ garden, with an ad in the local newspaper…(it cost me an astronomical £15 a week…).”

He added: “I’d been working with stained glass so it seemed a logical place to start.”

Shop

Drew ran his famous antiques shop in Conwy, North Wales. In the past year, Drew has slimmed down his business model. He now has only three employees. His famously beautiful shop on Conwy High Street in north Wales is gone. There’s just the warehouse. He told the Telegraph in May 2023: “We don’t even have a van anymore, there’s just the one we have for TV, obviously.”

Book

In May 2023, he published a book, “How Not to Be an Antiques Dealer: Everything I’ve Learnt, That Nobody Told Me”. It covers an overview of what the business is all about, what you’ll need, how to buy, sell and also etiquette: how to do things the right way.

On July 8, 2023, Salvage Hunters star Drew Pritchard was attacked in a pub by a man who claimed he had an affair with his wife. Janus Bryn Thomas saw red and attacked Salvage Hunter Drew Pritchard over a text message the reality star sent to his wife. Thomas said he was smirked at by Mr Pritchard in the Liverpool Arms pub, Conwy, and “swung out with his left hand in a rage”. Mr Pritchard was knocked to the ground, dropping his drink and glasses. Thomas, 47, had to be pulled off the TV personality by other drinkers, NorthWalesLive reported.

At Llandudno magistrates court in October 2017, magistrates heard from defence solicitor Michael Gray that Thomas had been “provoked” by Mr Pritchard, who had had an affair with Thomas’ wife Amanda. The court heard when the affair was broken off, Mr Pritchard contacted Mrs Thomas and said their involvement would be made public.

Mrs Thomas then received messages from what were described as Mr Pritchard’s “other women” blaming her for a breakdown in their relationships with him. Mrs Thomas then told her husband about the affair and the two agreed to stay together.

Then, in April 2017 Mr Pritchard sent Mrs Thomas a text which effectively called Thomas a coward. The exact contents of the text were shown to magistrates, but not to the press or public.

Mr Thomas, who was accompanied to court by his wife, was fined £480 for threatening behaviour and £960 for assault. Magistrates did not grant the restraining order applied for by Mr Pritchard, who did not attend the hearing.

In a statement after the court Thomas said: “I acknowledge the mistakes I have made, and I realise I have let my loved ones down. But today draws a line under this relatively minor incident and we can all move on. I will now be spending time with my wife and children, and focusing on my business”.
