Amit Mehta Biography – Amit Mehta Wiki
Amit Mehta is an American lawyer and federal judge on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He was appointed to the US District Court for the District of Columbia on December 22, 2014, by former US President Barack Obama, a member of the Democratic Party. Mehta received the oath of office from Judge Sri Srinivasan of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit on June 19, 2015. He made history as the first Asian-Pacific American to be sworn into the US District Court for the District of Columbia.
Born in Patan, India, in 1971, Mehta moved to the US with his parents at the age of one, where he was raised in a suburb of Baltimore. He went on to receive his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1997.
After law school, Judge Mehta worked in the San Francisco office of the law firm Latham & Watkins LLP before clerking for the Honorable Susan P. Graber of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Following his clerkship, Judge Mehta worked at the Washington, D.C.-based law firm Zuckerman Spaeder LLP from 1999 to 2002.
In 2002, Judge Mehta joined the District of Columbia Public Defender Service as a staff attorney. Judge Mehta returned to Zuckerman Spaeder in 2007, where his practice focused on white-collar criminal defense, complex business disputes, and appellate advocacy.
Judge Mehta served on the Board of Directors of the Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project and is the former co-chair of the District of Columbia Bar’s Criminal Law and Individual Rights Section Steering Committee. He is also a former Director of Facilitating Leadership in Youth, a non-profit organization dedicated to after-school activities and mentoring for at-risk youth, according to his biography on the website of the US District Court, District of Columbia.
Judge Mehta received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Economics from Georgetown University in 1993 and his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1997.
Mehta has revealed his love for hip-hop music in his rulings over the years. In a 2015 opinion, when Mehta heard musician Robert Prunty’s case alleging that several music and entertainment companies had infringed his copyright, the judge wrote that he was “capable of concluding as a matter of law, without the assistance of expert testimony, that the songs ‘Keys to the Kingdom’ and ‘Kingdom’ are not substantially similar.”
“This court also does not consider itself an ordinary ‘lay person’ when it comes to hip-hop music and lyrics,” Mehta added in a footnote. “The court has listened to hip hop for decades and considers among his favorite musical artists, perhaps a sign of his age, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Drake and Eminem.”
