Brenda Tracy is a prominent rape survivor and activist/advocate against sexual assault. She is also the founder of Set The Expectation, a nonprofit aiming to educate athletes and coaches about issues surrounding consent and sexual misconduct.

Tracy grew up in an alcoholic home. She said she was sexually abused by a relative as a toddler and raped at age 9 by her high school babysitter’s boyfriend.

In 1998, Tracy survived a brutal gang rape by four men – two Oregon State University football players, a junior college player and a high school recruit.She took several steps immediately after— visited a hospital, made a police report and hoped to see justice. Unfortunately, like with so many of these cases, that didn’t happen.

Brenda moved on with her life, having to deal with the life-altering trauma on her own, while her rapists moved on with little consequence. In 2014, she found the courage to step forward publicly, and now seeks to make the world a better place for survivors.

Since coming forward, Brenda has championed legislation in support of victims. She started the non-profit Set The Expectation to engage and empower men to become changemakers in their communities.

Tracy pushed to change NCAA bylaws for athlete governance directly, gaining attention at first by generating 150,000 signatures for a petition for the NCAA to ban athletes who commit sexual violence from playing again. The petition got the attention of the NCAA Board of Governors but eventually did not lead to any concrete changes.

“The idea that someone could know me and say they understand my trauma but then re-inflict that trauma on me is so disgusting to me, it’s hard for me to even wrap my mind around it,” she told USA TODAY. “It’s like he sought me out just to betray me.”

In his statements to the Title IX investigator, Tucker acknowledged masturbating on the call but said Tracy grossly mischaracterized the episode. According to him, they had consensual “phone sex.”

“Ms. Tracy’s distortion of our mutually consensual and intimate relationship into allegations of sexual exploitation has really affected me,” Tucker wrote in a March 22 letter to the investigator. “I am not proud of my judgment and I am having difficulty forgiving myself for getting into this situation, but I did not engage in misconduct by any definition.”
