Alex Waddell is a South Wales-based Carver and Stone Mason. He is cast in Make It at Market showcasing his skills in carving on BBC 1.
According to his website, Alex Trained as a stone mason at Winchester Cathedral. He was part of a team of masons for 6 years working on the Heritage Lottery Funded project carrying out major restoration and conservation work on the building as well as carrying out general maintenance on the surrounding properties. He then Traded Cathedrals for castles and worked at Cadw in the south of Wales conserving stone work on monuments from throughout Wales’s rich History.
Alex Waddell has been around carving from a young age when spending time with his grandfather who used to carve wooden rocking horses. Alex Carving first really started to develop on his own while studying sculpture at university but was really pushed to develop while working with more experienced carvers at the cathedral. He has taken part in carving competitions across the UK and they have taken him as far afield as Norway.
Normally found in his workshop in Cardiff Alex Waddell now produces a range of bespoke objects for clients across the UK. Alex works closely with clients to produce Garden features, Sculptures, memorials, and restoration work as well as producing individual Artworks in stone and wood for exhibitions.

Carver and stone mason Alex Waddell is cast as part of the crafts team on the television show Make It at Market on BBC 1 episode 15. The show is hosted by The Repair Shop’s Dominic Chinea.
He announced his appearance on the show with an Instagram post. He wrote: “Watched from behind a pillow and I’m a bit of amped up it’s all over. Was a pleasure to meet so many amazing maker. Some mad talent out there and it’s really humbling. Find more @makeitatmarket.”
He continued, “It felt like a long time since I’d needed to put about stone and chisels due to the lockdowns and being on my little workshop.”
“This gave me the chance to meet these two. They were great fun been swapping Tips tricks and they have both been amazing and calming presents so big thanks to my mentor @francis_stone_design and fellow carver @lukebatchelorsculptor.”
