Tito Mboweni Biography

Tito Mboweni full name Tito Titus Mboweni, is the Minister of Finance of the Republic of South Africa. He was born on 16 March 1959 in Tzaneen, South Africa.

Tito Mboweni completed his matric and registered with the University of the North to study Bachelor of Commerce in 1979. In 1980, he went to exile in Lesotho due to his political involvement against the Apartheid government. During his stay in Lesotho, he joined the African National Congress (ANC) and studied Bachelor of Arts (honours equivalent) majoring in Political Science and Economics with the National University of Lesotho. In 1987 he studied for a Master of Arts degree in Development Economics with the University of East Anglia in England.

Mboweni returned to South Africa in the 1990s and was appointed deputy head of Department of Economic Policy in the ANC. He also served as a representative of the ANC in domestic and international platforms. Mboweni was also elected to the ANC National Executive Council and became member of the National Working Committee of the ANC.

In 1994 he was appointed Minister of Labour by President Nelson Mandela. In 1995, he was honoured by becoming one of the World Economic Forum’s Global Leaders of Tomorrow. In 1997 he became Head of ANC’s policy process. On 4 July 1998, it was announced that Tito Mboweni would succeed Dr Chris Stals as President of the South African Reserve Bank in August 1999. Mboweni joined the Reserve Bank in July 1998 as an Adviser to Governor Dr C Stals.

In August 1999 he became governor of the Reserve Bank. On 9 October 2018, Mboweni was appointed the Minister of Finance of South Africa by President Cyril Ramaphosa following the resignation of Nhlanhla Nene.

His grandfather was Kokwana Makhakhamele Mboweni and grandmother, Gabaza. The grandmother was widowed at a very young age, the elder brother to his grandfather stepped in act as a proxy husband and she became one of his wives. She passed away at the age of 77, when he was in Form IV.
