Tia Connolly Britain’s Got Talent
15-year-old Tia Connolly is competing in Series 16 of Britain’s Got Talent. On 22 April 2023, Tia’s mother, Claire Connolly, stepped up onto the stage in front of judges Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden, Bruno Tonioli and Simon Cowell. At first it appeared that Claire was going to audition.
But then the mum explained she was giving up her chance to audition on the long-running ITV talent show to give her daughter Tia the opportunity to shine. Tia was gobsmacked as she joined her proud mum on stage after she sacrificed her chance in the spotlight to the daughter who she credits with changing her life.
She said: “She thinks it’s me who’s auditioning. She’s got me through some very hard times in my life and I feel like I owe her, so I’m giving my audition up for my daughter. This is my way of saying she’s fabulous because she deserves it and she’s an incredible person.”
After giving Tia the chance to digest what had just happened, the talented teen returned to the stage. She then floored the judges, the audience and viewers watching at home as she confidently belted out Whitney Houston’s I Didn’t Know My Own Strength.
Following Tia’s performance, Simon said: “That’s how you do it”.
He added: “I really love moments like this, you didn’t know you were going to audition, your mum set you up, I’ll just sing Whitney Houston then, like it’s normal.
“That’s very sweet what you did for your daughter because I’m guessing without you doing that she wouldn’t have auditioned. I absolutely loved this audition.”
Tia Connolly received four yeses from the judges.

Claire told Mirror Online that she has served time in prison and vowed to do everything in her power to ensure her daughter “doesn’t make the same mistakes” she did.
She said: “I did go to prison and that’s something I have to live with – the stigma follows me around. Of course I’m sorry. At the time I was angry… angry at life..”
She added: “I’ve tried to give my children [Tia and Ayannah] the best chance – and I’m so proud that Tia is grabbing that chance with both hands.”
Claire was arrested in 2012 after cannabis was found in Celebrations tins at her home. The mum, now of Accrington, was later jailed for 12 months for allowing her home to be used to supply drugs, as well as a second charge of affray for assaulting a woman in a drunken fight while on bail.
Claire said: “Going to prison made me realise I needed to get away from my old life. Now my children are my life – and I want Tia to get the chance to shine.”
