Tasha Ghouri Deaf

Model and dancer Tasha Ghouri was born completely deaf. The Love Island contestant told MailOnline her parents learned she was deaf when she was 12 months old and she had a cochlear implant, which is an electronic device, fitted aged five, as well as having years of speech therapy.

Tasha told MailOnline: “I was born completely deaf. My parents found out when I was 12 months old, I got a cochlear implant when I was five, which was quite late on. I had hearing aids until I was five, but hearing aids did not benefit me whatsoever. The cochlear implant is surgically done and it’s much more advanced than a hearing aid. Growing up I had to overcome a lot of obstacles, I’ve had speech therapy, a lot of hearing rehab but overcoming those obstacles has made me who I am today.”

The fashion model, who’s worked for brands such as ASOS and Boux Avenue, said she’s not only accepted her uniqueness but grown to love it.

She added: “I wasn’t always confident in my life, I have learned this is who I am and it’s not a negative thing or something I hate. I love it now. I really am happy about it. I’m a model and dancer I would never thought I’d be doing those things, my younger self would have been shocked.”

Tasha Ghouri Love Island 2022

Tasha Ghouri was a contestant on series 8 of Love Island in 2022. She announced the news on Instagram, writing, “AHHH! The cats out the bag and this cat is on Love Island searching for the one! @loveisland. Will our Tasha find her dance partner or will they have two left feet? Only one way to find out! #loveisland.”

Speaking of her decision to join the dating show, Tasha said: “My dating life has been a shambles. This is an opportunity for me to find ‘the one’ and have a great summer at the same time. I’m definitely ready for a relationship. I’m 23 now so I’m ready to get to know someone, go on holidays and travel with them.”

Asked how her family and friends would describe her, she said: “They would definitely describe me as wild. I can get very wild on a night out, I’m definitely a party animal. I love my prosecco and to have a dance – I’m always on the dance floor. I’m very loyal to my friends and family, I’ll always have their backs. I’m the type of person to put others before me. They would definitely say I’m a nap queen – I love napping! I think they’d also say I’m inspirational because of my hearing and my cochlear implant. I inspire quite a lot of people because I’m really open about it.”

On how competitive she is and how she feels about treading on toes, Tasha said: “It’s a tough one because I’m a girls’ girl but it is a dating show and I’m here to find my man. I may have to step on toes but I’ll do it in the nicest way possible.”

Love Island’s first Deaf Contestant

As Love Island’s first deaf contestant, Tasha is determined to prove that having a disability shouldn’t define you or be a reason to hide, especially when you’re dating.

She said: “It is crazy that I’m even doing Love Island and I hope this inspires young people not to be afraid to find love, put yourself out there no matter what superpower you have. I call it my superpower, not my disability, because it’s a superpower that nobody else has and it’s unique and special to me. I hope that this does speak volumes to people that it shouldn’t define you and it’s just a part of you and we’re all human, I’m not a robot just because I’ve got something on my ear, it’s just one entity about me.”

Tasha vowed to donate half of the show’s £50K prize pot to The National Deaf Children’s Society if she was to win as she hopes to follow in Strictly champ Rose Ayling-Ellis’ footsteps by becoming a role model to the deaf community.

She said: “If I did win Love Island my plan is to give 50 per cent of it away to The National Deaf Children’s Society, I have raised money for charities before and it’s something I love to do and to give back.”
