On July 12, 2022, attorney Tamra Curtis appeared to raise her middle finger to cameras during the sentencing phase of his trial.
Footage of the incident shows the assistant public defender annoyedly noting a cameraman pointing a lens in her direction before the start of a court session. She then appears to confer with Cruz and another member of her team at the defense table, before waving at the camera and raising her finger while scratching the side of her face.
The Florida Bar initiated a pending investigation against the Broward County public defender, according to attorney Jennifer Krell Davis, a spokeswoman for The Florida Bar.
It is unclear whether that moment is part of the Florida Bar’s pending investigation. The Bar confirmed to Fox News Digital but did not share any other details about the potential investigation.
The complainant of an investigation and other documents are not made public, Florida Bar Communications Director Jennifer Krell Davis said.
The Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (FACDL) filed a complaint against Broward Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer for her “courtroom exchange with members of the criminal defense bar was inappropriate and violates Canon 1 of the Florida Code of Judicial Conduct.”
