Susan L. Opper, also known as Sue Opper, is the District Attorney for Waukesha County. She was appointed Waukesha County DA by Gov. Scott Walker in 2015 after she had served in the DA’s office for 23 years to fill the remainder of Brad Schimel’s term. Opper was re-elected as Waukesha County DA in 2016 and 2020.

“As a twenty-three–year veteran of the Waukesha District Attorney’s office, Susan Opper has shown that she has what it takes to build on Brad’s success as District Attorney. I’m confident she will serve the citizens of Waukesha County well,” Walker said at the time.

Opper will retire in 2024. She told The Freeman she will not seek re-election when her term is up in 2024. “I will be retiring at the end of my term which is at the end of 2024. 33 years is enough! Lol,” Opper said in an email. “It’s been a good long career and I need to move on and enjoy some retirement years.”

Her former positions with the Waukesha County Prosecutor’s Office include many years as an Assistant DA and as Deputy DA before her appointment as Waukesha County District Attorney.

Opper earned her Juris Doctor degree from Marquette University Law School in 1991 and her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. She and her husband live in the town of Delafield.
