Stephanie Scolaro sold snakeskin baseball caps and bags on her website “SS Python” and also via her Instagram account. She also sold some of the £450 baseball caps with Boudi Fashion boutique on South Molton Street, Mayfair.
Police began investigating the model after a package sent from Indonesia was stopped as it was sent via Leipzig in Germany. German customs then alerted British authorities and forwarded the DHL parcel on to the UK.
Scolaro had sold some of the caps through Rogue Menswear in Bexleyheath, Kent, for £185 but suggested a retail price of £350.
Customs officials seized another shipment of eight caps and another large bag made of illegal skins was stopped at Heathrow Airport on 8 March 2017. Scolaro was arrested and interviewed on the same day by police and gave a no comment interview. Police later found two forged importation certificates.
In total, police seized 35 caps, valued at around £12,215, alongside a large snakeskin bag that Scolaro had listed for £2,800 on her website.
She was charged with keeping specimens of python leather at her luxury home in Park View Residences, Marylebone, on 8 March 2017.
Scolaro admitted smuggling a black travel holdall, five white baseball caps, five black baseball caps and one white backpack made of python skin into the country in December 2016.
Scolaro admitted two counts of importing goods with the intent to evade a prohibition, two counts of keeping for sale a species acquired unlawfully and two counts of selling a species unlawfully imported.
On January 21, 2019, she was handed a 12 month community order requiring her to carry out 160 hours unpaid work.
