Siobhan Cattigan Biography – Siobhan Cattigan Wiki

Siobhan Cattigan (born Siobhan Elizabeth Cattigan) was a Scottish rugby union player. She won 19 caps for Scotland between 2018 and 2021, with the back-row making her international debut against Wales during the 2018 Six Nations.

She previously cited that Scotland’s historic win against Ireland in 2018 was one of her personal highlights, with the side claiming an away victory for the first time in 12 years. She went on to enjoy further notable success in a Scotland shirt, including a successful tour to South Africa in 2019 and the impressive draw against France during the 2020 Six Nations.

A talented back-row forward and all-round rugby player, Siobhan started all three matches of the 2021 Women’s Six Nations tournament, playing at number 8 against England, Italy and Wales. She was most recently involved in the Rugby World Cup 2021 Europe Qualifiers squad, where she came off the bench in Scotland’s first win of the tournament against Spain.

Her love for rugby began at the age of five, when she joined McLaren Minis which was based in her hometown of Callander. In addition, her older brother played for the minis section and her father was also a coach at the club.

She studied Criminology and Sociology at the University of Stirling before going on to receive a Master’s degree in Sports Psychology. She was a prominent member of the university’s rugby club, and captained her side to victory in the 2016/17 BUCS league.

Advocacy

Siobhan was an advocate for women in rugby and spoke out about sexism in the sport. In August 2020, she hit out at an ad agency for advertising women’s rugby kits with models – while international players advertised the men’s versions.

The Stirling-born flanker wrote: “I gave up playing rugby in high school after being bullied for being the only girl who played. I got called a man, muscly and many other derogatory things. As a young and impressionable 14-year-old this hugely impacted me and I gave up the sport that I had a clear talent in because of other people’s narrow-minded opinions. It took a random decision at 19 to go back to rugby and give it a go at uni and, one uni team, one club team and 14 caps for my country later and I haven’t looked back since. I promised myself that day I would never let others’ opinions alter my life again.”

Responding to sexism on Twitter in 2020, she also said: “Opinions like this are the reason I stopped playing the game I loved in high-school for 5 years. It is only down to luck I went to uni & decided to start playing again. If I continued to care about opinions akin to the below I’d not be sitting here with 14 caps for my country.”

During her time in high school, she received the War Memorial Prize in recognition of her charity work for Yorkhill Children’s Foundation.
