Simon Yu is a Canadian engineer and Mayor-elect of Prince George. He elected the mayor of Prince George on Saturday, Oct. 15. He will become the 21st Mayor of the City of Prince George. Yu received ​6,092 votes (40.2 per cent), ahead of Terri McConnachie (4,152 votes/27.4 per cent), Roy Stewart (​2,424 votes/16 per cent), Adam Hyatt (​1,773 votes/11.7 per cent), Lisa Mitchell (​553 votes/3.6 per cent) and Chris Wood (159 votes/one per cent).

Yu moved to Prince George from Hong Kong in 1975 at the age of 15. He attended what was then called Prince George College, a Catholic boarding school. He’ll be the first first-generation immigrant to be mayor of Prince George, when he and the rest of the new city council are sworn in on Nov. 7.

Yu is the lead engineer at Simon & Co. Structural Engineers. He has over 30 years of consulting engineering services in northern B.C. and was an instructor at the College of New Caledonia and a member on the board of directors at UNBC, the Prince George Airport Authority, the Downtown Business Association and other community organizations.

Yu worked in the 2003 Aceh Post Tsunami housing relief effort. He also spent time as the municipal manager for Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, in the late 1980s where he said he gained the knowledge of municipal administration practices and how to work with senior governments.
