Sami Valimaki Biography – Sami Valimaki Wiki

Sami Valimaki is a Finnish professional golfer who plays on the European Tour. Born in Nokia, Finland, Sami represented Finland at the 2018 European Amateur Team Championship, defeating England in the final and was in the top ten of the World Amateur Golf Rankings in 2018. He turned professional in 2019 after he completed his compulsory military service in Finland at the end of 2018.

Becoming a professional golfer was always the goal for Sami. He told the European Tour: “Being a professional golfer was always the goal for me. My parents got me in to golf, and I had a couple of good friends in my home club that I grew up playing with. I started to get more competitive and play all over Finland, and then almost straight away I was trying to make it Europe playing junior events and team events and I played a lot of Nordic Golf League events as an amateur, which really helped me turn pro.”

He recorded his first professional victory at the Open Casa Green Golf in Casablanca, Morocco on the Pro Golf Tour and went on to record three more victories, finishing second on the Order of Merit. The professional golfer went to the European Tour’s Q-School in 2019, producing four of six rounds in the 60s to secure his card for the 2020 season.

He earned his maiden European Tour victory in just his sixth European Tour start, defeating Brandon Stone in a playoff at the 2020 Oman Open, becoming the fourth Finn to win on the European Tour.

In September 2020, Sami Valimaki reflected on his rookie year on the European Tour, saying: “I’m very pleased with my scoring and my game in my rookie year on the European Tour. I only turned professional at the start of 2019, and I started out playing on the Pro Golf Tour (PGT). I won three times in a row at the end of the year, which gave me a lot of confidence going into Q-School.

“I didn’t expect to win so quickly. I had one goal at the start of the year, to win one tournament and have a good category for the next year. It was a great feeling to win that fast, and to do it the way that I did with a great fightback on the back nine in Oman, holing that putt and especially to win in the play-off. It was a great memory for me.”

He became the first player from Finland to win the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award after a stellar debut season on the European Tour, finishing 11th on the 2020 Race to Dubai Rankings Presented by Rolex.
